A beautiful movie (as always) by Guillermo Del Toro, rumoured as one of most expensive Mexican movie at that time, this film is surely one of best Mexican export of all time. Excellent plot, great script, good acting by Federico Luppi and Caludio Brook (which is Luis Bunuel’s favorite), and masterful direction by Del Toro himself.
Cronos follows the story of a kind hearted Mexican antiques dealer Jesus (a well cast Frederico Luppi), who one day stumbles upon a huge golden mechanical bug that when applied to specific parts of his anatomy seemingly starts reversing the aging process. However lurking in the background are a demented man (played by a very haunting Claudio Brook) who realizes the potential of the mechanical bug’s power: it will give him eternal life as a vampire and will stop at nothing to acquire it. Assisting him in his search to get the mechanism is his maniacal son Angel (Ron Perlman, familiar face.. I’ve seen him in several movies, as the bad guy role of course).
The horros scene were brilliantly executed, and there was a well-balanced humor too (I loved the mortician scene in cremation house), the gimmick, the cockroaches (which is director’s signature ~insects) and the make up effects were stunning.
Finally, this movie will have you gripped until the last frame!
