A beautiful movie (as always) by Guillermo Del Toro, rumoured as one of most expensive Mexican movie at that time, this film is surely one of best Mexican export of all time. Excellent plot, great script, good acting by Federico Luppi and Caludio Brook (which is Luis Bunuel’s favorite), and masterful direction by Del Toro himself.

Cronos follows the story of a kind hearted Mexican antiques dealer Jesus (a well cast Frederico Luppi), who one day stumbles upon a huge golden mechanical bug that when applied to specific parts of his anatomy seemingly starts reversing the aging process. However lurking in the background are a demented man (played by a very haunting Claudio Brook) who realizes the potential of the mechanical bug’s power: it will give him eternal life as a vampire and will stop at nothing to acquire it. Assisting him in his search to get the mechanism is his maniacal son Angel (Ron Perlman, familiar face.. I’ve seen him in several movies, as the bad guy role of course).

image

The horros scene were brilliantly executed, and there was a well-balanced humor too (I loved the mortician scene in cremation house), the gimmick, the cockroaches (which is director’s signature ~insects) and the make up effects were stunning.

Finally, this movie will have you gripped until the last frame!

PAINK ( FRENCH PUNK ANTHEMS 1977-1982)

The first French incarnations of “Punk” (pronounced “paink” in Numerous local) Were not carbon copies of Their foreign exemplars.

Babbling, swarming, morphing, genuinely disorganized anarchy, bad intentions Transformed into good ones: that’s how punk rock (or at least a close approximation) was INITIALLY Adapted to fit our peculiar French perspective. There was not the Slightest network to distribute gold records organizes concert tours. Older generations Were hostile (or worse, compassionate or even paternalistic). There was nothing and no one to forge a connection betweens the handful of small, isolated groups, Fundamentally motivated by a passion for What They Deemed true rock ‘n’ roll (the desire to terrorize the neighborhood arrived soon afterward), each in Their Own little world, Trying to provoke Their backwater town or metropolis Their blade, and meeting, of course, with total indifference.

It was not a movement of any kind, Contrary to what was said later in slipshod items and books. For some a few, it was a sincere attempt - Necessarily doomed to failure in a country: such as bear (be it under Giscard gold Mitterrand, it was all the same to us) - to combine wicked guitar noise, a limitless disgust with everything and That boredom temperamental Simultaneously Undermined and nourished the everyday world of the teenager (or, for the slightly older ones, post-adolescent).

This first of the trilogy was made under the auspices of Francis Ford Coppola, some part of the movie was featured by The Strokes in their clip: “Hard to Explain”. Directed by Godfrey Reggio and Philip Glass scoring the music. It took almost 6 years to make the film, and 3 years to scoring as it was a continually evolving process.

The movie itself, as many reviewers reviewed, is indeed beautiful. I can’t imagine how was it filmed back in late 70’s. It’s a moving photoghraphy, forced harmony, interiorized film that communicates to you from the realm beyond words, a welcome assault to your senses.. watching this movie will left you utterly blown away. Perhaps one of the most important documentary movie mankind ever create. You don’t need to "get it", just watch it.

Well until now, yes..

“You’re never really seen the world you live in.”

This, the foxxxy ‘Fox Umbrellas’
Handmade in England since 1868, Fox Umbrellas offer a classic range of products that not only look great, but do their job by keeping you dry. The GT3 opens manually and features a steel tube frame and Malacca handle.

• Polyester canopy
• Malacca cane handle
• 25” steel tube frame
• Approximately 36” from handle to ferrule
• Approximately 50” in diameter when open
• Handmade in England

What the fuck is ‘malacca’ by the way?

Early in this century, Malacca was referred to as the "King of Canes." Malacca is one species of rattan (Calamus Ascipionum) found on the coast of Sumatra. Rattan palms have long, slender stems, and were perfect for fashioning.

The stem is not round, but has a ridge or spine, often called a “teardrop,” running along its length. It is very light-weight, yet strong, with no two specimens being alike. The stem is made up of links with joints or nodes at both ends like bamboo. The bark is strong, with what appears to be a satin, natural gloss or surface glaze. Then, it’s all up to you..

The definition of a store is not what it used to be. Today, shopping can be done almost anywhere, and in an ever increasing number of ways. We now shop online, offline, on our mobiles apps, through Tumblr, and by clicking products in shoppable videos. We forage for deals through coupon apps and on private flash sales. Sometimes we don’t even browse: we let algorithms automatically recommend products for us. Meanwhile, offline stores are responding to this digital disruption by completely rethinking what the limits of a physical store experience can be.

It seems that developments in how we shop show no signs of slowing down. It’s uncertain how we’ll be shopping in five, ten, fifteen years from now, but one thing is clear: shopping tomorrow will not be what it is today.

What’s your thought? Are we close to there yet? Or are we already in it?

Yeah! Finally the first batch of artist tees is dropped! These are OBIN, BIYAN (WANAATMADJA) in black / white Gildan tees.. The seamless t shirts are coming in good shape, hard texture (yes it’s GIldan), I believe it’ll getting softer after first soak (no more than 10 mins.-as written on the tag). After all, I think the print itself is fairly fair, because we don’t use any plastisol or hard coated screen printing method. It’s direct print. Anyway it’s cool to wear a t shirt printed with your very own idol. ;)

What is ‘Soul’ music?

According to Wiki, its a popular music genre that originated in the United States in the 1950s and early 1960s, combining elements of African American gospel music and rhythm and blues.

A music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm & blues into a form of funky, secular testifying. Catchy rhythms, stressed by handclaps and extemporaneous body moves, are an important feature of soul music. Other characteristics are a call and response between the soloist and the chorus, and an especially tense vocal sound. The style also occasionally uses improvisational additions, twirls and auxiliary sounds.

image

image

There’s so many legends in this ‘Soul’ kind of music, but I choose to not put any female talents in this mixtape. I have a special feeling baout this guy: Marvin Gaye, his tricky and mischievous voice caused millions of babies born in the period of Negro rises in America. His vocals can make women feels fervid & uneasy. Then goes to Bobby Womack, Al Green, some track from Stevie Wonder’s Innervision, then goes further to Luther Vandross, who backed Bowie and Chic in his early career, and many more talents.

I put two hidden tracks, no clue, but it comes to more modern-Soul era, when soul meets funk, groove, and had a more mixture with pop music. Please enjoy the tracks :)

Thanks to my fellow good friends at @DapperBack & @KentBrushes_id who sent me a new comb, Kent 20T type, which really satisfies my craving: a practical comb, precise, foldable, easy to carry, with exceptional handmade quality.

Kent Brushes (as they are now more commonly known) was founded in 1777 by William Kent in the reign of George III, is one of the oldest established companies in Great Britain.

image

image

image

image

My post-combing-face & a handlebar, thanks to the moustache wax

Kent's handmade combs are saw cut, and then hand polished and buffed to create soft rounded teeth that will not damage your hair or scalp. They are made from cellulose acetate, a non-petroleum based plastic derived from plants that has been found to create less static in hair. These smooth teeth stimulate the natural oils inside the hair cuticles as your hair is combed, and it is this oil that encourages the cuticles on each hair to lie flat creating strong, healthy, shiny hair.

Maybe all of these words are much influenced by the price and hegemony of the comb’s brand, but a price is never lie, right? There’s a huge difference when combing with Kent, than regular plastic comb. You have to feel it yourself.. Next time I will upload detailed photos of my hair after using this Kent comb. Keep combing & pomping hard gentlemens!

Yesterday my dream is finally happened, I saw my Arsenal FC competed against Indonesia Dream Team in Gelora Bung Karno Stadium Jakarta, live. Although my ultimate dream is see The Invicibles play, but this -31 years long awaited match, -after their last arrival to Surabaya- certainly can not be missed.

image

Watching in category one, the commoners & working class tribune, was pretty far from satisfactory ofcourse, but what can I say, this is Indonesia , man! Even my friend who was sitting in the VVIP is telling me there was a lot of audience jumping over the fence for the player’s signature, because VVIP stand is just above the player’s hallway to the locker room. Funny indeed.

image

image

The match was very attractive, especially in 2nd half we can really see what called ‘The Arsenal Way’, supreme-passing, accurate, measurable and world-class feint is the delicate dish. I didn’t expect Indonesia will be conceded 7 goals and scoreless, as the line-up was actually, is the countri’s best. But yeah, Indonesia remains Indonesia, they seems scared first before kicking the ball, lost their guts to Arsenal players whose average is still under 25 years old, the oldest was 29 years old.

One Player that I felt really special is Gedeon Zelalem, tiny player, perhaps only 165cm tall, but his role as a midfielder was incredible. He was able to play quite nicely last night.

image

image

The stadium vibe is very lively, friends fans of AIS was extraordinary, the chants didn’t stop shouted from beginning to the end of the game, just like watching Arsenal directly at the Emirates. Gooners who came were various, from big cities in Java to cities like Lamongan, Wonosobo, to Gooners Ternate, Makassar, Bali, and others.

Well, hopefully in two or three years ahead Arsenal will come again.. Victoria Concordia Crescit!

Last Saturday (6/7/2013) House The House, in collaboration with U&KL, held the Birdhouse Project: Launching Exhibition @ U&KL Eco-Forestry Area, Bandung. Almost 40 participants were invited: designers, architects, creative collectives/studios, and artists (including me) participated in this project.

This very special moment for me, because it’s been a long time since last time I tparticipating in an exhibition, I was busy with office work in Jakarta.

About a month ago my good friend from House The House, Mr. Meizan invited me to participate in this exhibition. It was destined, after I did a review to the background & discourse for this exhibition, I didn’t hesitate to quickly execute my ideas about making an urban birdhouse.

Me and my birdhouse ‘Kroto’ , pic courtesy of morrieandoslo.com

Works that I created using mahogany wood material, with glossy red paint finish, which is quite striking. My ideas came and shaped up when I saw an old container of chicken feed, then I modified in such a way to form a more dynamic & modern shape, easy to hang. I use a strong rope, its called a Paracord Cord (military grade) to hang the cage. More details were published on behance.net/DittoAdjie

The show itself was very lively, Bandung is not raining at all, I met a lot of old friends, mentors and colleagues, more like a perfect summer party with a decent playlist from the DJ. Really it was a good vibe.

All of the birdhouse are still displayed at U&KL Store and available for purchased. My birdhouse is called ‘Kroto’ is priced at IDR 800,000,- If you are interested, contact me directly via email: dittoadjie@gmail.com and it looks like I’ll give a huge discount because I think yeah it’s a bit too expensive for a birdcage! :))

Lately I feel very bored with music arounds, I no longer open pitchfork, nodata.tv, or my iPod podcast even listening to radio. And in fact I do not watch television, because it’s full of music bands that I think, their musicality, -though I’m not a musician or expertise-, is quite alarming. Then I recall my old memories, the era of 90s, and indeed the music back in those days was still good to hear until now. There was more quality in the lyrics.

Maybe because of it, musician & bands nowadays only able to cover old songs. Since there’s no longer novelties they could show, all just visual matters.

Okay enough of preaching, here’s the mixtape list:

1. YA UDAH - HUMANIA
2. J.A.P - SHEILA ON 7
3. TAK INGIN - WONG
4. JANGAN KAU HENTI - LINGUA
5. KIRANYA - PROTONEMA
6. KUTA BALI - ANDRE HEHANUSA
7. MENJEMPUT IMPIAN - KLA PROJECT
8. AKU MAKIN CINTA - VINA PANDUWINATA
9. BURUNG GEREJA - NUGIE
10. AKU MILIKMU - DEWA
11. A.C.T.K - FATUR
12. TERBANG - GIGI
13. KALAU BULAN BISA NGOMONG - DOEL SUMBANG
14. DUA HATI - BIMA
15. KEBEBASAN (SINGIKU) - ??? REMIX

image

The list goes from Humania, duo, the pioneer of Nu Jazz/Pop Indonesia, and then the best selling band of that era -Sheila on 7, to Protonema, a famous rock band who goes from college stage in Bandung -along with Java Jive-, to infamous singers such as Andre Hehanusa, this man is the only Indonesian who performed a duet with the Cassanova, Mr. Julio Iglesias. I also put Doel Sumbang on the list, although his influence comes from Dangdut, but he made a huge impact to Indonesian Pop mixture.

Finally, there’s an old saying:

Grew up in the 90’s, lived the 90’s. Still listening to the 90’s now.
Live forever.

Enjoy. You can download the mixtape from this link http://j.mp/16pQE0E
